Strategy: Balancing text in columns

Text in one columnI had to write a paper and it needed to have columns and equations. Trying to get the text balanced on both sides of the paper and justified caused problems with the figures and general look.

Justify textEventually I realised needed to justify the text - using the home menu bar. Then I had to highlight the text in that part of the paper (before my image of the equation) I wanted two columns with equal lengths of text on either side. You can add columns breaks to make it equal and I learnt that it can be done automatically from advice on-line (TechRepublic.com).

To automatically balance text across columns:

  1. Place the cursor at the end of the columns that you want to balance.
  2. From the Insert menu, select Break.
  3. Under Section break types, select Continuous.
  4. Select OK.

"I just wanted to format the text to give straight edges and pack the figures exactly to the columns. I haven't been able to work out how to do this effectively."
