Strategy: IEEE plug-in for Word Reference Tool
4 Keywords: IEEE, Reference, Word, EndNote
"I found a super add-in for Word which adds the IEEE reference style to the list of built-in styles. This allows me to use the Word Reference Tool, which is perfectly capable, rather than a third-party solution such as EndNote. I am now using this in ALL of my assignments!"
The add-in is available free from the Microsoft CodePlex Open Source Community. It is an XSL file which has to be placed in your Program Files folder. Two versions are available - one which sorts references by order of use and another that sorts alphabetically. The order-of-use version works directly, but the alphabetical version requires a separate add-on.
To install it, download the XSL file using the above link, and save it to the location that fits your version of Word:
Word 2003: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\Bibliography\Style
Word 2007: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\Bibliography\Style
If you are using a 64-bit system, remember to look in "Program Files (x86)" - if you are unsure whether you are using 64-bit, ignore this section.
Further installation instructions are available.
Restart Word to see the new style. Remember that you will only be able to refresh your list of references on a computer that has this style installed. On other computers, it may fall-back to another style such as APA; your references will not be lost.

"I have found that EndNote is a little overkill for simple referencing when writing assignments. Surely there must be a simpler solution?!"
