The Belkin USB hub shown is just one example of the many that are available on the market.  They allow a user to plug one cable into a computer USB connector and then offer many more connections for a printer, mouse, keyboard, camera etc than are usually available say on a laptop that may only have one USB port such as the MacBook Air

There may also be card readers on the hub for cameras and other devices using digital storage cards.
