Task: Presentations
As the University of Southampton Study skill pages say "Giving presentations is one of the skills that employers expect graduates to have, so you should make the most of any experience you can get at university. You may need to give presentations:
- in tutorials
- as part of the assessment of projects
- in Union activities or staff-student committees."
The web pages go on to offer advice on preparation, practise and presentation skills. The University of Bournemouth offer further advice on 'Giving Presentations' as part of their Academic skills web pages.
Microsoft PowerPoint is the favoured presentation application across many universities, but there are dangers of death by bullet points and the application does not always offer similar presentations across different platforms for examples equations made on a Windows computer may not be seen on a Mac.
It is also essential to follow some simple guidelines to make your presentation accessible and perhaps to pause and think 'what makes a good presentation?'
SCIPS highlght some of the issues that can arise for students when presenting in groups or tutorials.
Teaching and learning materials that are presented on a wall, black, white or digital board or even by a projector can be hard to see for those with visual impairments. Alternatives such as handouts and electronic versions provided before the event can be immensely helpful. The student can plan how to interact with the presentation and seek further support if necessary.
Issues with reflections on white boards can be particularly difficult colour and pointer changes can help if the board is digital.
