Task: Citations, References & Bibliographies.
Edinburgh University have a PDF document on the subject of references and the first question they ask is: Why cite references? Their answer is:
- "To allow those reading the record of what you’ve done to read the sources you have read.
- To credit, and show you have read, the key relevant work and can use it to support your arguments and so indicate where your work has taken you further.
- Citing and referencing work you have read and used avoids plagiarism."
Plagiarism can appear quite complex when one goes into the details of the different types that occur, especially when it is related to ones own work.
There are several videos on the subject including the one pictured as part of a non-interactive video quiz from Rutgers University library. A clear guide to referencing has been put up on YouTube by the University of Birmingham.
JISC have an Internet Plagiarism Advisory Service for staff and for students; the Internet Detective provides guidlines and a quiz for keeping on the right side of the law

- How to obtain a guide to writing references
Oregon State University has a video on how to begin using EndNote. However, EndNote
is not always easy to use, although there are many guides available for example the one offered by the Assistive Technology Services at the University of Southampton
It is now possible to use Microsoft Word 2007 to create a bibliography and some students use tables to which they add their references as they go.
