Summary of course taken
I took a course in Computer Science and during my time became on the course became interested in assistive technology as although I could see reasonably well I have always depended on large monitors when working. I have moved from using PCs to Macs as I find they have better options when it comes to clarity for reading. But I still tend to peer at text and end up being very close to the screen.
Description of strategies used.
I have used two monitors for most of my time studying and now I am working I have one set up for reading in portrait mode and one for coding, not to mention all the other programs running in the background.
Track balls have always suited me better than mice but I tended to get RSI with the Logitech Trackman version - now I use the Mac Magic mouse.
I have found reading large amounts of text tiring but I really enjoy books and the computer screen is not always at the best angle. E-book reading seem to offer a way out of this dilemma. The iPad has revolutionised my reading - I can now read a paper back in one evening!
I rarely write by hand and tend to use the computer for everything. Skype, email and the web are my ways of coping with work and correspondence. I have a blog, run a website and develop databases, I tend to set up the screen resolution and brightness to suit my eyes depending on the time of day and lighting. My first job was working in sales but then I took a degree and from then on have really made the most of computer skills to see me through work and any further studies.
