"Mainly the applications are not set up very well (referring to specialist magnifcation software). I don't work well with them. It would enlarge things so that you can't see the whole thing in one go, which I like to be able to do. Whereas, if I use something like Word, and just change the font size, I can see it all on the screen at the same time."

The first picture shows the built in magnifier in Windows enlarging areas of the desk top. The second picture shows the way font sizes and icons can be changed using the desktop display properties inWindows XP or Personalization in Vista.
