6 Keywords: References, Referencing, Bibliography, Dyslexia, Specific Learning Difficulties, EndNote
"Even when I’m being shown in a lecture how to use Reference Manager, say - I am there - yeah - OK this is fine ... you get an hour then you go off and you have something else distract you away from what you have just learnt (especially as a mother) then you think OK the kids have settled down for the evening ... and "Where did he go..oh it was somewhere up here... and I was ‘clicking around’ in this particular area and it wasn't happening the way it was for him. No - thats it I 'can't spend hours on this trying to find out whats what and there are other people who do know and who will show me again,!"
I found that a session with Andy in the Assistive Technology Service was more helpful with clear instructions and has made some useful help sheets on EndNote. Having had this session I also made a Harvard Reference Crib sheet (Download Word doc) to remind me about the punctuation needed between all the names and dates. There are some differences between EndNote and Reference Manager mainly related to working on the web and the number of layout options. Here are some notes taken during Andy's training session:
Using Endnote with MS Word
- First-add citations in document.
- Check reference at bottom of page.
- Delete citations using the Endnote remove.
- How make new page using Page break.
- Put new title for this sections called References.
- Add the citation again and check new reference is in place.
- Put in next citation, add page number in the EndNote database under suffix having used the editor.
- Use formatting menu for changing fonts etc.
Making a New Endnote library
- Open new library.
- New reference, choose style of referencing e.g.Harvard and add data to fields.
- Make sure you have the correct 'reference type' for each reference.
- Make sure punctuation is correct.
- Close window to add reference to database.
Insert Reference from Internet
- using TDNet at University of Southampton.
- Enter the name of the journal.
- Browse for particular journal -go to 'Full text Access'.
- Find the article- look for citation manager or reference manager.
- Download file -choose citation and abstract.
- Choose 'open' from the next dialog box.
The citation will be linked back to actual article.
Quote
"I looked through all the feedback and it’s abominable, really...It was the fact that there were references in the reference list that were NOT mentioned in the text. Or there was a reference in the text that there wasn’t in the references."
